A $500,000 grant from the National Football League will enable the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and medical equipment manufacturer Neuro Kinetics Inc. to test the effectiveness of a diagnostic device prototype, the I-Portal® PAS goggle, for early and accurate detection of concussions.

More than 300 walkers representing UHealth-University of Miami Health System joined the Miami-Dade Heart Walk Saturday, November 1, at Bayfront Park. Raising nearly $13,000 to help fund research and education sponsored by the American Heart Association, UHealth placed third among all of the companies participating in the event. A total of $366,000 was raised.

The Lennar Foundation, the charitable arm of The Lennar Corporation, one of the nation’s largest builders of quality homes, has given a lead gift of $50 million to name the UHealth at Coral Gables ambulatory center. A ceremonial groundbreaking event for The Lennar Foundation Medical Center took place last Thursday afternoon.

Cardiovascular physicians at UHealth – University of Miami Health System are the first in the Southeast U.S. to implant a new miniaturized, wireless monitoring sensor to manage heart failure. The CardioMEMS HF System has been shown to reduce hospital admissions by more than one-third when used by physicians to manage heart failure. It was implanted at University of Miami Hospital, the flagship hospital of UHealth.

Before a packed auditorium full of family, friends, and University and Miller School of Medicine leadership, longtime philanthropists Sydney and Elaine Sussman made their latest gift in the hopes of improving care for cardiovascular patients for generations to come. The Sussmans presented the Elaine and Sydney Sussman Endowed Chair in Interventional Cardiology to Alan W. Heldman, M.D. during an October 7 ceremony.

A collaborative report encompassing three Miller School and UHealth departments highlights a new technique for surgically accessing sensory nerves and neuromas. Published online ahead of print in the journal Neurosurgery, the report is the first to illustrate the use of pre-operative ultrasound combined with specialized needle placement to localize the infrapatellar branches of the saphenous nerve.

For Carl E. Orringer, M.D., the newest faculty member in the Cardiovascular Division, the move from Cleveland to Miami is a homecoming. Orringer is a triple ’Cane, with a B.A. in chemistry (1970), an M.D. (1974) and a residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital (1977). Thirty-seven years later, he’s back, bringing with him a high-profile cardiovascular disease-prevention program that he developed.

Fogel, M.D., received the AXA Advisors Lifetime Achievement Award at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce’s Health Care Heroes Awards Luncheon, held on May 20 in Jungle Island’s Treetop Ballroom. In addition, Mary Bartlett Bunge, Ph.D., won the Health Care Hero Award in the Bio-Medical category.

Zambrana, who was previously the hospital’s chief operating officer, has served as interim CEO since January. He joined the University of Miami Hospital (UMH) as chief nursing officer in 2008.

More than 1,000 UM faculty, staff, alumni and guests participated in the 2014 Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run/Walk on April 24. UHealth Sports Medicine was the official first aid provider for the event. Medical personnel from University of Miami Hospital manned the first aid tent to ensure that the more than 25,000 runners received prompt medical attention for any blisters, scrapes or bruises.
