Biography

 Hansel Tookes, MD, MPH is Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He joined the faculty in the division of Infectious Diseases after completing his residency in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital. His research interests include behavioral interventions and innovative approaches to HIV prevention. While in Public Health School and Medical School at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, he authored 2 papers that were highly effective in advocating for the passage of the Infectious Disease Elimination Act, Miami’s Pilot Syringe Exchange Program. He is the founder and medical director of the IDEA Exchange pilot program. He has received numerous honors including the Miami Chamber of Commerce Healthcare Hero, SAVE Champion of Equality as well as numerous advocacy awards. He has served member of the Board of Governors of the Florida Medical Association for two years and has advocated successfully for health policy change in Tallahassee, testifying in the Florida Legislature for years. Prior to medical school Dr. Tookes worked in public health. He graduated from Yale University with a B.S. in Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology.
