As laboratory medical director my primary role is to ensure that a comprehensive quality management system is in place to provide accurate and timely results to clinicians for optimal patient care. Other clinical activities include maximizing laboratory test utilization and the role of the pathologist in the broader evaluation of the acquired and genetic basis of bleeding and thrombotic disorders.

Current areas of research include diagnostic approaches to the evaluation of bleeding and thrombotic disorders. As for many complex disorders, the relationship between inherited risk and environmental factors act together to create the overall risk profile for an individual, whether it is propensity for bleeding, venous thrombosis, or arterial thrombosis. Better tools are needed to translate information about relative risk into actionable information for patients and clinicians.
I am also studying quality management systems and optimal utilization of laboratory services for more accurate and cost-effective diagnostic approaches to disease in the developing world.
