Biography

Dr. Amer Malik is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Neurology in the Cerebrovascular Division of the Department of Neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He currently serves in various clinical roles, including as a stroke service attending physician at both Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami Hospital. He also maintains a busy outpatient practice focused on the spectrum of cerebrovascular diseases as well as general neurology. He currently serves as Associate Director for the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Vascular Neurology fellowship program.

 

Dr. Malik completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Maryland-College Park, earning dual degrees in Physiology and Neurobiology and in General Business and Management, respectively. He graduated from the University Honors Program in 2000 with distinctions of Phi Beta Kappa, Cum Laude, and Beta Gamma Sigma. He matriculated to medical school at the University of Maryland School of Medicine beginning in 2000 and graduated with his M.D. degree in 2005. He took a one-year sabbatical during medical school to pursue a traditional M.B.A. program in Health Care Management and Finance in Washington, D.C., graduating with distinctions of Cum Laude and Beta Gamma Sigma. After graduating medical school, he subsequently trained in neurology residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He was peer-selected to receive the Resident Teacher of the Year Award upon graduation from residency. He then completed his fellowship training at the esteemed ACGME-accredited vascular neurology program of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He then worked for several years as a neurohospitalist and vascular neurologist at multiple institutions, including Swedish Medical Center in Seattle, WA, and Baptist Hospital of Miami and West Kendall Baptist Hospital in Miami, FL. Prior to joining the University of Miami, Dr. Malik served as Medical Director of the Stroke Program at Baptist Hospital of Miami and as Medical Director of the Stroke Program at West Kendall Baptist Hospital. He joined the University of Miami Cerebrovascular Division in March 2014.

 

Dr. Malik’s practice scope includes the full spectrum of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke management as well as multiple other cerebrovascular conditions such as carotid artery stenosis, venous sinus thrombosis, moyamoya syndrome, cerebral aneurysms and vascular malformations. He treats and manages patients in the hyperacute emergency setting, inpatient setting, and the outpatient clinic with a focus on secondary prevention. His current research interests include optimization of acute stroke systems of care in regards to neuroimaging, acute thrombolytic therapy, and endovascular therapeutic options. He serves as a lead scientific investigator in trials involving acute intravenous thrombolysis in minor stroke patients as well as the management of asymptomatic carotid artery stenosis. Dr. Malik was elected by national membership to serve on the Board of Directors of the Society of Vascular and Interventional Neurology (SVIN).
