Dr. Stephen Symes was born in Trelawny, Jamaica in 1964. The son of a high school teacher and a forester, he came to the United States in 1982 to attend the Howard University College of Liberal Arts, majoring in zoology. He continued his medical education at Howard graduating first in his class in 1989. Dr. Symes came to Miami for residency training in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial Medical Center, served as Chief Medical Resident at the VA Medical Center, and joined the faculty with the Department of Medicine in 1994.
Dr. Symes has focused his clinical activities on HIV and AIDS, and has dedicated his career to the care of patients as well as the education of students, physicians and other health care workers. Special areas of interest include co-infection with Tuberculosis, rapid HIV testing, vascular disease and metabolic syndrome in HIV-infected patients on long term HAART, and immune response disease. Most recently, he has focused on resolving health care inequities both locally and internationally, with emphasis on training young physicians to pursue this as future career.
Dr. Symes is married to Alexis Powell, M.D., who also specializes in the field of HIV and AIDS. They have three children, ages 11, 8 and 7, and live in North Miami. |
