Alexis Powell, M.D. was born in Syracuse, New York in 1964 and earned an undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Le Moyne College. She attended Howard University College of Medicine, earning her medical degree in 1989 and completed training in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, FL in 1992.
After being witness to the impact of socioeconomic and health disparities on urban families during undergraduate externships with Catholic Charities, Inc., Dr. Powell has been committed to practicing medicine in underserved communities. Initially with the Area Health Education Center, Inc. and now with the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, she provides general medicine and HIV/AIDS care for patients in many distinct Miami-Dade neighborhoods. Reflecting her dedication to increasing healthcare access, Dr. Powell has practiced in a variety of health models including comprehensive medical centers, community clinics and mobile vans. Her vast experience includes a medical directorship at a clinic within a large shelter in Overtown which contributed to her current expertise in recognizing and valuing diversity and adapting medical care to the unique needs of individuals, families and communities.
Dr. Powell, a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, specializes in HIV/AIDS care. She provides care in the Adult HIV hospital and clinic services and acts as consultant for the GYN HIV Primary care clinic as well as transition specialist for the Special Adolescent and Pediatric infectious Disease clinics. In her continuing effort to reach underserved communities, she serves as medical advisor for COACH, the Jay Weiss Center’s community-based HIV disparities study and is also a co investigator of a public opinion leader model project for HIV prevention in Florida City.
